History

Links of Wood’s history goes back to the early 1980’s, when an idea for decorating our house by making 3-D wooden pictures became a business.  In the beginning, friends encouraged us to make and sell these pictures at local arts and craft shows.  They sold very well, so we added a few retail outlets, and by the year 2000 there were more than a dozen outlets selling our pictures.  We also collaborated with Patrick Spielman, the author of many woodworking books, to produce a book describing our techniques and the construction of our projects.

In 1999, we moved to northern Wisconsin from Green Bay, where my wife had been an elementary teacher for 30 years.  We phased out the 3-D wall hangings business and started to enjoy life at our lake home, where we met a gentleman in the home remodeling business.  A friendship grew,  and the collaboration on a new idea, 3-D lake maps, began.  We started production together in 2002, and are now creating and selling approximately 1,700 lake maps per year throughout the United States and Canada.  The lakes have a striking freeform appearance, and each one is unique in its representation of an hydrographic depth map.

Quite often people who viewed the lakes at shows mistook the lake maps for golf holes, so a new idea emerged.  And here we go…  We will be creating golf hole and course replicas in three-dimensional wood formats with as much detail as we can.  The woods used in the construction will be oak, mahogany, birch, cherry, ash, pine, maple, and walnut veneers to create the striking representation of these holes and courses.
